Restoring Motion for Little Hands
Trigger digits, a condition affecting the smooth movement of tendons through their surrounding ligamentous tunnels, can occur at any age. In children, the condition is most commonly seen in the thumb and presents differently than in adults.
Dr. Rebecca S. Yu specializes in diagnosing and treating pediatric trigger digits, offering compassionate and effective care to restore your child’s hand function.
In children, trigger digits typically involve:
Trigger Thumb: Often present at birth or appearing within the first few years of life. The thumb is usually locked in a flexed (bent) position and cannot straighten on its own.
Trigger Fingers: Less common and anatomically different, requiring careful evaluation and discussion for appropriate treatment.
Unlike in adults, pediatric trigger digits are usually painless, and children may not complain about the condition.
The exact cause of pediatric trigger digits is unknown, but it may develop due to:
Symptoms include:
A locked thumb or finger in a bent position.
Difficulty or inability to straighten the digit without assistance.
In about 60% of cases, pediatric trigger thumbs resolve on their own by the age of 4. Even without complete resolution, the contracture often improves over time. Observation may be recommended initially.
If the contracture persists and limits function, surgery may be necessary.
For Trigger Thumbs: Surgery involves releasing the ligament blocking the tendon’s motion.
For Trigger Fingers: Surgery may be less predictable and requires careful evaluation. Dr. Yu will discuss the best options after examining your child.
Dr. Yu combines specialized expertise with a compassionate approach, ensuring your child’s care is both effective and supportive. She is dedicated to helping children regain full hand mobility while minimizing disruption to their daily lives.
